Mulch, Bark and Stone Installation
Mulch is a terrific way to help maintain the health of your planting beds. Mulching naturally occurs in West Michigan through fallen leaves, pine needles, lost blossoms and other organic matter. Harder and Warner Landscaping provides installation of new mulch and mulch replacement. Mulch comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors; let our trained staff help you select the product that best benefits your landscaping.
Types of Mulch
- Bark Mulch
- Cedar Mulch
- Wood Chips
- Colored Mulch
Bark mulch is one of the most popular mulches. Bark looks great when it is first installed and since bark comes in large chips, it will decompose slowly. Bark does a superior job of retaining water moisture in your plant beds. Shredded bark is another option; it decomposes faster providing nutrients more quickly into the soil and does an even better job of minimizing water evaporation.
Cedar mulch has the advantage of water retention and acting as an insect repellent. Cedar is a little more expensive than bark and wood chips but the ability to ward off insects makes if worth the additional cost.
Wood Chips contains bark and pieces of wood in various sizes that make attractive mulch. Small wood chips decompose very rapidly using nitrogen from the soil, which needs to be replaced by nitrogen fertilizer. Wood chips may attract termites and other insects
Colored mulch is a very popular alternative. It’s is comprised of wood chips or shredded bark that have been dyed to various colors. This mulch product can greatly enhance the appearance of your landscaping. Coloring the mulch does increase the cost and the dyes sharpness will fade requiring maintenance or replacement sooner as a result.
Stone Groundcover can dress up the look of your landscaping. Stone installation is great alternative as it comes in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors and provides a long lasting improvement to your plant beds. The initial cost stone is more expensive than organic mulch but stone can look great for years and does not have to be replaced or re-covered on an annual basis.
When fall arrives, it’s the time of year in West Michigan when we begin to prepare our yards for the coming winter weather with fall cleanup services. Fall cleanup includes removing leaves from plant beds and gutters, removing dead or fallen limbs, trimming back bushes and preparing lawns and gardens. You can count on Harder and Warner Landscaping fall cleanup service to prepare your property for the frozen white blanket of winter.
Lawn Fall Cleanup
Lawns require the most care during the fall cleanup period. Leaves need removing along with any fallen limbs or debris. Lawns may also require a final mowing cutting the grass to the appropriate length to endure the winter and along with any late fall applications of fertilizer.
Trees and Shrubs
Fall cleanup can be the ideal time to trim back trees and shrubs. Harder and Warner Landscaping staff include trained arborist and know the ideal method for pruning your landscapes plants and trees. Additionally, fall cleanup is also an ideal time to remove dead plants, limbs or trees.
Plant Beds and Gardens
Last but not least on the fall cleanup list are your planting beds and gardens. It is best to remove annual flowers and especially vegetable plants. Tomato and potato plants left to rot can transmit fungal disease into your soil and can affect next year crops. Once the annual plants are removed, it is a good time to till and add fertilizers or organics to the soil. These beds are then topped off with a layer of mulch.Back to top

You never know what you will find once the snow has melted. Leaves, limbs, and lost mail are typical finds in our yards. To prepare your lawn for the growing season, these items are removed and the lawn is gently raked.
Damage to your lawn is not uncommon and can be caused by road salt and plow services. Harder and Warner Landscaping will seed and prep the damaged areas for the growing season rather than leaving it to become a future mud puddle.
